5 Things You Should Do Before You Get a Deep Tissue Massage

Posted by Victoria Brunacci on

Everybody loves a good massage session, and what’s not to like? It is not only a great way to de-stress and relax, but it is also a truly heavenly experience that leaves you feeling happy and rejuvenated. But did you know that certain types of massages do much more than that? Deep tissue massage, for example, works the deeper layers of your muscles to relieve the built-up tension as well as release toxins. It also helps reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, and lowers stress hormone levels.

If you have never received a deep tissue massage before, you need to know that you should prepare for the session before you go to the spa. Here are a few things you need to do:

  1. Find the right therapist

This is definitely the first step to enjoying a therapeutic deep tissue massage. Do some research to find a good therapist. You can also check out client testimonials and online reviews for a better idea. When it comes to finding the right massage therapist, you should always look for both experience and expertise.

  2. Limit your food intake

The last thing you want to do before you go for a deep tissue massage session is eat a heavy meal. Always limit your food intake on the day of the session, especially a few hours before the appointment. Since this massage exerts intense pressure on your muscles, a full stomach will make you quite uncomfortable. If you must eat before your session, stick to light and healthy snacks.

  3. Drink plenty of water

Make sure you drink a lot of water the day of your appointment. It is crucial that you stay well hydrated during your massage. This is because deep tissue massage works your muscles and breaks up knots, which releases toxins. When you drink plenty of water, it aids the body in flushing out the toxins much faster. Water also helps with the post-massage soreness that you may sometimes experience.

  4. Try to warm up your muscles

If you want to get the most out of your deep tissue massage therapy session, you should ideally work out before the session or take a hot bath. This will warm up your muscles, which will make them much more receptive to the deep work. In case you are unable to do that, you can always take a long warm bath after the session to ensure that the effects of the massage last longer.

  5. Provide the necessary health information to your therapist

To be able to enjoy a healthy and holistic massage session, you should have open communication with your therapist. Tell them about your medical history. Let them know if you suffer from any chronic pain or injury. You can also include information about any allergies that you might have.
